RETROSPECTIVE ALLOWANCES.

WELLINGTON, June 11

The retrospective allowances promised to returned' soldiers who went to the Avar before the more generous ravte of allowances was agreed to by the Government are now being paid. By June 6 warrants had been issued for payment under this head, amounting to* £136,467, to 12665 people; warrants for under £40 had been issued, to the value of £52,516, to 1323 people; and

warrants for over £40 had been issued of a total value of £83,951. The largest .warrant was for £156, and there were 69 'warrants for £100.
