MT. SOMERS.

A very large gathering assembled in the Mount Somers Hall to bid a hearty welcome to Captain It; B. Neil upon his return from the seat of war.

Mr J. T. Bull presided, the function taking the form of a social and dance, a short and popular concert programme being rendered by various local talent.

During the evening the Rev. A. J. Petrie, in the course of an excellent address, remarked that the guest was the first to leave the district after the declaration of war, embarking on a secret mission to Samoa, returning and departing in charge of a: reinforcement for England, thence to France, where ho attained the rank of Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel. On behalf of the residents the speaker extended a very hearty welcome, wishing the Captain all happiness and prosperity. Captain Neil very suitably responded, relating several of his experiences, especially as to the spirit of comradeship existing in the army. He thanked all present for the hearty welcome, and he especially thanked those who had helpeT'to attend to hie property during his absence. Apologies of absence were received from Rev. W. R. Milne and'Mr M. Harper. After sugper dancing was indulged in till the early hours of the morning.
