He started- his career ] at' a teacher at Ashburton, where he was a pupil teacher from 1891 to 1895, when he became a student at' the ~Nor'mal School, as the Training College wa» formerly designated. He was* master at Riverside in 1896, and in the same year was assistant-master at Ashborton for a few months, after which he resumed his position at the Riverside School. In 1899 he was appointed m£ ster of tne Groenstreet School, in 1901 first assistant^master at Ashburtan. in 1909 first assistant-master at. Richmond. ,\vhoro he remained till h^ took up .-the position of' assistant-lee-lurer at the Training College in 10]5.
