The crowds at the Brandenburg Gate wei-e, so. huge that the troops lining the- route failed to, keep a free passage, .''and 'a. portion of the troops returning, were ■ forced t-o assist. The so-rcalled "conquerorb" struggled' onwards, carrying flags, greenery, and, flowers. The new Republican Guards led the way, : .and' members of the' Government occupied an imposing \_. grandstand;' The men looked fit but horses were..worn. Crowds''at. the windows and. balconies showe're'd'flowers and cigarettes od the men.' ' ' .
