"SOON BE SPENT."
ALLIED PEOPLE CONFIDENT
(Received June 1, 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, Muy 31. Dospito the German progress public opinion iv England and France remains confident that tho enemy's blows will; .soon be spent. It is evident that the Germans intend to porse'vere. while any momentum remains.
Airmen report extraordinary actmty in the German rear. The onemy evidently realises that it is vitally important to maintain superiority in numbers, which alone accounted for the success hitherto.
There is considerable speculation regarding the enemy's immediate intentions. Some believe the enemy intends to reach the Marne and two it to guard his left, flank whilo he changes direc.tion westward, as ho used the Oise to protect his right wing in the March
offensive. Another theory is that ho will endeavour to extend the battlefront westwards of Soissons and take the direct road to Paris.
