HivS assaults against tho British yesterday, apparently aimed at a converging movement upon the Jittle town of Cardie, wero delivered in dense waves, which- machine-gun and rifle fire heavily punished. He succeeded in straightening out a little .salient in our line in the neighbourhood of Hainel Wood and village. Our counterattack was not sufficiently strong to restore the position. The weather was wet aud misty, and it was impossible for our airmen to co-operate.,
