LOCKED IN STRONG ROOM.
An alarming adventure befol a clerk in a Trowbridge brewery. He was accidentally imprisoned in the strongroom, and had a narrow escape from suffocation. Mr Walter Gardiner, employed at, Usher's Wiltshire Brewery, Trowbridge, had placed the firm's ( books in the safe preparatory to leaving i'or the night. He was about to close the door, when h« realised that the gas inside the safe had not been turned off. Stepping inside to extinguish the light, he heard, to his horror, the massive door close with a snap. There was then no one on the premises, and his calls for help could not be heard outside the building. The atmosphere sqpn became so heated that the imprisoned clerk found it almost unbearable, thoro being no ventilation. Temporary relief was secured by cutting away with a knife a piece of flooring near the door. He persisted in his efforts, and some time, later succeeded in attracting the attention of passers-by in the street. \Mysterious muffled rappings were heard, and,. suspecting burglars, the police were fetched. Officers failed for some time to locate the continued faint rappings. At last they traced them to the strong room, and on the door-being opened discovered Mr Gardiner iv a state of collapse.
