SUBMARINE BRUTALITY.
HELPLESS 130 ATS SHELLED. LONDON, Feb. 4. The "Merchant Service Review"; vouches for the following story:—A large British cargo vessel was torpedoed by a submarine in December. The crew took to the boats and the submarine then shelled the boats, killing and wounding several in the captain's boat and throwing tho remainder into the j water. The submarine fired 20 shells I at tho mate's boat, but all missed, the j •occupants meanwhile lying at the bot~| torn of the boat. The submarine camej •up and ordered the castaways to re-1 board the cargo boat, and covered them with rifles while a boat's crew crossexamined tliem. The mate asked for permission to succour the captain's crew, but this was refused. 'Hie Ger-j mans looted all tho navigation instruments and then ordered the survivors to re-enter the boat. The mate visited the captain's boat and found the captain severely wounded, washing about on the bottom of the boat. Seamen hung to the gunwale, supporting an apprentice, who, however, was already dead. The castaways were many hours in the boats without food and suffered badly from exposure until a patrol vessel rescued them.
