j Tlie monthly meeting of the Ashbur- > ton High School Board, hold this : morning, was attended by Mr J. Tucker (in the chair), Messrs A. Drummond, Rev. G. Miller, W. B. Denshire, 11. Galbraith, C. Reid and W. T. Lill. Apologies for non-attendance received from Messrs G. H. Buchanan and W. Oakley. Ifhe headmaster reported a.s under , in connection with the recent examina- j lions: —University entrance scholar-j sjiijj: One candidate gained a. University national scholarship, one passed with credit, and two passed the examination qualifying for matriculation. Matriculation: Three candidates passed and one gained a partial pais. Royal Military Colloge of Australia : Two candidates passed and have been awarded cadetships at Dginiroou. Senior national scholadship: One candidate gained a scholarship and four others passed the examination. Junior national scholarship: Three candidates :g;ained scholarships, vone • iirstr on the: list for Canterbury, and nine, others passed the examination. Public service entrance: Throe candidates passed the examination. Senior free place: Five candidates passed, and 19 others wore awarded senior free places. Junior free place: Two candidates passed. Junior free place extended: Four, candidates gained an extension for a third year. . Proficiency certificate: Two candidat-es passed and a third gained competency.—The report was received. With regard to the equipment of the agricultural laboratory, the Education Department wrote intimating that a grant of £205 on the basis of £1 for £1 had been approved. It was explained that owing to the increased cost of scientific apparatus due to war conditions, ,it was' thought, that the equipment-might well be limited to absolutely necessary -requirements.'-— Members expressed the opinion ;that the Board was quite entitled" to the amount originally asked for, 'namely, £300, and it was resolved to reply informing the Department that this sum was essential to equip satisfactorily the laboratory. , ■ ■• Mr W. F. Waiters tendered his resignation as the Board's representative on:the Ashburton Technical School Board of Managers.—Accepted; Mr Waiters to be thanked for his past services. Mr R. Galbraith was appointed hig successor. ■ Messrs Tucker, Galbraith, Denshire and Reid were appointed a committee I to superintend the construction of the new buildings. The Ashburton County Council advised that at the first meeting of the. newly-formed council, Messrs Lill and D.fumrabnd were re-elected a& tho council's representatives on the Board. : —Received. Accounts amounting to £304 3s 4d ■ were passed-for payment. ,;
