THE HAT TRADE.

PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEE'S REPORT ADOPTED.

WELLINGTON, Oct. 25! In the House of Representatives this afternoon Mr Payne resumed the debate on the report of the Committee on. the operations of the American Meat Trust. Ho contended that the only sure way of combating the operations of the trust was for the State to get into direct'touch with consumers jn Britain. There was too much "rake oft" between the producers here and the consumers in England, and someone was making undue profits. Mr W. H. Field urged that there should be closer cd-operation between the British and Oversea Governments in.the handling of meat. The shipping problem should be solved by the Government, even if it went the length of a State service. Mr Anstey said he did not altogether blame them, but if anyone in New Zealand was associated with Armour and Co., the Bank of New Zealand was the greatest sinner of the lot, as the finance of the Meat Trust was guaranteed through that bank. . Mr T. A. H. Field said this report was the; first gun in a great struggle with the big American companies. ,'After further debate the report, was adopted. ; , >
