PENETRATION OF DEFENCES

(Received Oct^ 24., 2.15 p.m.) LONON, Oct. 23

A German official report statea:—Tile Anglo-French penetrated deeply into our defences at the southern edge,of the Houthulst Wood, but counterattacks repulsed the enemy, whose gains were only ,300 metres deep and •1200 metres wide. The enemy's assaults on Poelcapelle astride the Gheluvelt Road, failed. The enemy's artillerying between Ailette and Brayo increased to continuous drumfire in the^ morning. The French attacked at daybreak.
