TWO LIVES LOST.

GISBORNE, January 22. A heavy lainstorm at Tokomaru Ba.y caused floorls.

'A* young-man named Lewis,.aged 21 years, a -carpenter, went out at 6 o'clock to look at the flood, when the bank gave way, and he was drowned. ,A' child named Hanlon, 18 months old, was also drowned. The father had handed the child.to the mother whilst the family wore escaping from the house. The mother tripped, and fell, and the' child was washed away.

A number of small bridges were washed away and stock were drowned.It is reported that 10 inches of rain fell inland.
