RESOLVE AGAINST NIGHT WORK
AUCKLAND, January 6. , At a ballot of watersidors the question of cessation, of work between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. resulted: Yes 512, no 59. Carried by 453. ,
Up to the present (says ' Friday's Auckland "Star") tho practice in Auckland is to load and unload ships according to then 1 arrival and convenience of; departure, which means that the principled ofcontinuous work;,.is in ■force, \yherca.s in the other main ports of the JDominic-ii work is, suspended pctween: the hours of 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. On the occasion of tho arrangement of the last agreement between' the employers and waterside workers, in 1915, however, strong opposition was taken by the Auckland ship-owners to a suggestion that the continuous work principle should be amended to comply with the present requirements, and the matter was left optional, but as the result of a demand by some of the local workers the 'Auckland branch of tho -New Zealand Waterside "Workers' Union consented to the present ballot being taken on tho subject. The main con, tetion of those supporting a change is that it will bring; about a more equalised distribution of employment.
