DRAPERS' ASSISTANTS' UNION.! CHRISTCHUUCFI, May 29. The following letter has been received by the secretary of the Christ-ohui-ch Retail Drapers' Assistants' Union from the Canterbury Employers' Association: — Dear Sir,—Your letter of the 23rd inst. regarding a 10 per cent, war bonus was laid before the Retail Drapers' Section of 1113' association at a meeting held this forenoon, and I am directed to remind you that after a Conciliation Council sitting extending over two days an agreement was ar--1 rived at covering an increase of practically 10 per cent, on the minimum wage of both male and female assistants. This agreement was signed less than four months ago by three union assessors, as well as three employers' 1 assessors'. If, in addition to this, you 1 now want employers to agree to a fur- . thor 10 per cent, increase, making a now award 20 per cent, increase, then I your proposal cannot be entertained. 1 I am directed to add that surprise was oxpressod that, being parties tn an I agreement so recently signed and not yot indeed ratified by the Court, " but which is being observed." you should now want to repudiate it and treat it ns a " scrap of paper."—Yours faithfully. F. Cooper, Secretary.
