MEETING.
HAMPSTEAD TOWN BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Hampstead Town Board was held last evening. Present:—Messrs W. H. Robinson (chairman), W. Thompson, P. J. ■Baker, W. J. Cunningham, and W. Korr. ! The Chairman reported that the credit balance at the Bank amounted to £66. , The Secretary reported that the ] Public Works Committee of the Ash- ■ burton Borough Council had met to j consider the terms under which tho Board would allow the water main to be laid to the abattoir. The Council was; willing to supply the fire plugs asked for, but at a charge of £4 each. They were also willing to give the services of the Fire Brigade at a cost of £1 extra over and above the sitbsidy now paid. Tho Council would also agree to keep the road in repair, and would not attempt any repairs .without the, consent of the Board. It was also agreed to supply the water to residents wJio asked for it as long as the water i.w.as available. The Council did not approve of the term of 10 years as stipulated by the Board, and considered that it should be left out of the agreement.
; , Tiio Chairman stated that he did not think the Board had any desire to tie the Council down to a term. What tho Board desired was to get control of ■ the water along that area.
Mr Thompson said he was willing to agree to extend the term for another five years, but did not approve of granting permission for jan indefinite period. All- Baker considered that the Council should be asked to. charge •■tho Board a lump sum for the water supplied to householders, and allow the board to collect from those ratepayers. The Secretary stated that he thought the Council would agree to the suggestion. Mr Kerr said it was no good trying to be, too severe on the Council, because it might find another method of getting the'pipes through on _ a health score by getting an Order-in-Council.
It was decided to empower tho Chairman to interview the Council's solicitor and arrange to have the term of 10 years deleted, providing he is satisfied that tho Board's interests would be safeguarded. It was decided to ask the Council to supply fivo fire plugs, the cost to bo charged to the Board. Correspondence. j • Ah- G. W.
