ANNUAL MEETING.

The annual meeting of the Ashbur- ; ton County Council was held at "^Councillor C. J. Harper (Chairman), in thanking the councillors ' i'or the consideration they had shown to him during the past term, stated that he was proud to say that the Ashburton County Council was a live body. Some people had said that there were too many elderly members in the Council, and they did not progress quite enough, but this was not so. The councillors had always accepted his ruling in a cautious manner. He hoped that the Council would work together during the'next two years-, with, the same '■'harmony as they had during the past term. • Or. Morgan moved that 'Or. Harper foe re-elected chairman. Ho stated that Mr Harper had rendered great service to the County during his long term of office. He was pleased to see that Cr. Harper was enjoying good health, and that he would be able to continue to act as chairman. JSlr Harper had always conducted the bnsmoss of the Council in a capable and cautious manner. He had made a practice of allowing free discussion, winch was very hefpfu! hi arriving at proper decision's. ... Qr. Cairns seconded tho nomination, andfr stated that he had sat on the ObAincil for four years, and. considered siimi Cr. Harper had always carried out his thitics faithfully. „ He trusted he would enjoy good health for a further term of useful work, as it was in tho best interests of the County that lie should continue in office. The other members of the Council then paid tribute to Cr. Harper's capabilities. Cr. Harper was then unanimously dected Chairman. In thanking the Council for his reelection, Cr. Harper stated that he would still continue to work in the best interests of the ratepayers. He was now .77 years of age, but thanks jbo a, good constitution, which he had inherited/he was'able still to do a hard day's work, and keep going as well a.s when he was fifty yoars of age.
