The Right Hon. Sir Joseph Ward passed through Ashburton. this morning on his way to Wiriton, where he wilJ visit tho Agricultural and Pastoral Show.

Mr David McLaren, Dominion Organiser for the New Zealand Patriotic Society, went through this morning to Invercargill, where he will conduct a recruiting campaign. Ho expects to be in the Ashburton County on December 2, when he will give an address at the Fairfield Carnival in aid of. the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. !.,>; The Rev. Messrs W. J. Elliott and J. D.. McArthur, and Mr W. E: Sleep, home missionary at Malfield, loft-Ash-burton to-day to- attend the'""South Canterbury Methodist Synod which

opens at Oamaru-to-morrow morning. The lay delegates (Messrs F. Frainpton, D. McKenzie, and G. W. Andrews) J will leave to-morrow to be present at ~^*sie financial session on Thursday. Before commencing the ordinary business at the, Ashburton, Borough Council last evening Cr. F. Z. D. iFerriman, on behalf of the Council, -^congratulated the Mayor, Mr E. Galbraith, on his restoration to health. The Mayor thanked the Council for the many kind enquiries made while he was in the hospital. He also particularly thanked Cr. Ferriman for the careful attention he gave to the Council duties while Acting Deputy-Mayor.
