ENTERTAINMENTS.
HAYWARD'S PICTURES. The screening of a melodramatic play entitled '' Captain Alvarez " occupied about an hour and a half at His Majesty's Theatre last evening. The film was 6000 feet in length, and, though the story it set out to tell was an impossible one, it held the attention of a- fair audience throughout its unwinding. The essence of the plot, which dealt with a supposed revolution in the Argentine Republic, was that Robert W. Wainwright, who had been commissioned to proceed to Argentina to watch certain American interests, finds the placfe seething with disaffection against the Federal Government. He .communicates with the rebel leader, but' his message is intercepted, and he is adviaad to leave the country; but he has fallen in love with Bonita (the niece of the Foreign Minister of the Federal Government). However, he takes out a passage on the first ship, but just before sailing ho swims ashore and joins tho Rc.bbls under, the name of Captain Alvarez, becoming a scourge of the Federals. .-He is soon a marked man and tracked incessantly. All sorts of plans are made, for his capture,, but he frustrates them all. till in one 1 mad moment, when love conquers everything, he falls a victim; but his resourcefulness and his bravery bring, him success, and when the Rebels porno triumphantly into the capital it. is " Captain Alvarez " who welcomes j them. Despite the impossibleness of the plot, the melodrama gave scope -for some clever acting, and the principals —Edith Storey ("Bonita") and William D. Taylor ("Wainwright" and "Captain' Alvarez ")—together with Myrtle Gonzalez ("Mercedes," Bonita's 'nephew), certainly made the-most ,of their opportunities. "A Corner in 'Hats," tho comic picture with which the programme was concluded, was an excellent mirth-raiser of the best type. ( and was uproariously received. The same programme will be screened again this evening. . ' ■ ■
