LAST NIGHT'S NEWS.

THE DARDANELLES.

THE NAVY'S WORK

OLD SHIPS EMPLOYED. LONDON, October 25. Mr Ashmead Bartlett, writing in the " Daily;- Telegraph,"! gives some further .particulars about the work of the Navy .at the Dardanelles. The Fleet, he says, has an enormous responsibility in guarding the flanks of the Army. After the Goliath was torpedoed the Army's right wing was left to take care of itself at night time, while .the warships were withdrawn from the danger points. In the strait the German submarines had a wonderful chance of sinking British warships. One admires the enterprise of their commanders, but British submarines, given similar opportunities, would have done better. The Admiral continually transferred his flag to smaller and less valuable vessels. All ships remaining there now carry out their duties with the same precision and coolness as the earlier vessels, though they are from 12 ■ to 20 years older, and would have been, on the scrap-heap but for. the war.
