ASHBURTON AMATEUR CLUB
The annual meeting of the Ashburton Amateur Swimming Club was held in the Commercial Hotel last evening. There was a sparse attendance, and Mr G. H. Scott presided. The annual report read as follows-: "In presenting the annual report your committee congratulates the club on having passed through another successful season. Not quite the same amount of interest has been shown as in past and former seasons, which, under the war circumstances, is only natural. The annual carnival was well attended, and fine form was shown by numerous visiting competitors. The public attended in large numbers, and showed keen interest in all the events. The evening meetings were dogged with reverses; postponements were numerous, and changeable weather Interfered on several occasions. Nevertheless, the events were keenly ' contested, a.nd close finishes were witnessed. No one member secured more than two events, which shows how closely- the handicapper had accomplished his work. The schoolboys' championship of Canterbury was won by a junior member of the club, despite the fact that through an oversight he missed competing in the first event. Prizes to the value of £24 2s have been distributed, and; although the season was run at a loss, our assets exceed the liabilities by Is 9d, wh.ch, under the circumstances, must be considered satisfactory. As all the.eligible active senior members have enlisted, the coming season's events will be. For juniors only, and it is not intended this season to hold the annual carnival. It is recommended that a roll of honour bo prepared. One member has been killed in action, and several wounded. It is also recommended chat nil members on active service be made honorary members iintil the war ceases. The' thanks of the club are due to all who donated prizes and assisted at the annual carnival. Junior inemlwrs are urged to secure new members to take the places of those who are now serving their country." The balance-sheet was not presented, as it had still to bo placed in the hands of the auditor.
The annual report was adopted with the recommendations contained therein. The whole of the retiring officers were re-elected, with the exception of Mr R. Galbraitli (Mayor), who was elected president, vice Mr Henry'Pavi<=. who was added to the vicepresidents' list. Mr J. K. Allen was elected secretary. 1 It '.vns decided not to affiliate with the Canterbury Centre and the Ashburten Snorts' Association this year. Messrs O. H. Scott, J. R Allen. H. A. Wooif. W. CUirk, H. Freeth. and \V. C V. Samuels were nnnointed a committee to ninnnge the affairs of the .club in the coming season.
