LAWN TENNIS.

ASHBURTON CLUB. Annual Meeting. The annual meeting of the Ashbur^ ton Lawn Tennis Club was held last evening. There was a fair attendance, and Mr F. W. Seidon was voted to the chair. I The annual report read as follows:— "In bringing forward th<i report for season 1914-1915, your committee have to state that taking into account the great upheaval in other parts of the world, which to some extent must materially affect a sporting clvb r tho * Ashburton Lawn Tennis Club held what ' may be considered a fairly successful season. The competitions were well j filled, and some excellent play was wi,t- J nessed. At Christmas time, an open f tournament was held on the Domain ' grounds, and was very successful, both from a playing and a financial standpoint. Visitors generally were loud in their praise about the management, and it was considered that the 1914 tournament even surpassed its predecessors held by tho Ashburton Club. Quite a number of our members have enlisted for active service, whilst some are now in tho firing line, and in this direction it is with sadness that we chronicle the death of one of our late committeemen, Sergeant A. E. Mortimore, who fell fighting for his country at the Dardanelles. We also have to record the loss of that sterling player, Anthony Wilding, who gave his life ofr his country. The following are the winners of different competitions held during tho year:—Men's Doubles Handicap, Messrs R. B. Hart and H. Freeth; Ladies 1 Single Handicap, Miss Stewart; Combined Handicap, Mr D. Friedlander and Miss Stewart; Men's Single Handicap (Class A), Mr H. Amos; (Class B), Mr A. M. Gilmour; Men's Single Championship, Mr G. H. Buchanan; Ladies' Single Championship,' Miss Smith; Ladies' Double Handicap, Misses Smith and Stewart. The forthcoming season, from a player s standpoint, promises well, as the grounds are in very good order, and with reasonably fine weather wo may look forward to another bright year. The finances of the club, as shown by the balance-sheet, are in a flourishing condition, as, including the pavilion, our assets over liabilties show, the sum of £290." ■ . . The balance-sheet showed the following itsms:—Receipts : Balance brought forward from' season 1913-1914 £12 Bs--Bdj subscriptions £G3 2s, entrance fees £4 10s, rent from St. Mary's Club £10, Christmas tournament £43 2s, miscellaneous £11 Is Bd, total £144 4s 4d. Expenditure: Rent to Sports Association £30, postages £1 17s, printing and r advertising £1 7s, wages £8 los, nets £2 5s 6d, repairs, etc.,. £5 3s 9d, entertaining visiting teams £4 lls 6d, improvements to pavilion. £10 16s 3d, donation to" "Sports Queen" £10 10s, Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association £2 2s, Christmas tournament £39 10s 9d, miscellaneous £8 9s 3d, total £125 Bs. The credit balance left is £18 lbs 4d. The assets over liabilities show a credit of £288 5s 4d. . The Chairman moved the adoption of the report and balance-sheet. He said that the club was to be congratulated on tho soundness of its position, financially and otherwise. As far as the coming season was concerned, there mi"ht be fewer players ofr the various competitions, but he saw no reason why tho club should not carry on. Mr D. M. Montgomery seconded the motion. He said that it behoved tho older members of the club to keep things going. Many of the younger members had gone to the front but the future of the dub-must be guarded, else other clubs might endeavour to usurp some of the influence hitherto exerted by the Ashburton Club. The motion was carried. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr C. W. Purnell (re-elected); vice-presidents, Messrs •Hugo Friedlander and T. Bullock (reelected); secretary and treasurer, Mr E W Friedlander; committee, Messrs G. H. Buchanan, F- W. Seidon, H. F. Cooke, D. Friedlander, H. Fmdlay, D. M. Montgomery, C. Denshire; auditor, Mr H. E. Curtis; delegates to the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association. Messrs J. McLeod and P. H. Cox; delegate to Ashburton Sports Association!! Messrs D. Friedlander and C. Denshire. The opening day was fixed for Labour Day (October 25), and it was decided to invite the' attendance of players of: other clubs. It was decided not to hold the annual tournament at Christmas. One new playing member was elect-

Ed, and six resignations were accepted.

Votes of thanks were accorded to the retiring committee, to the retiring secretary (Mr D. Friedlander), to the ladies who had looked after the refreshments, to the donors of special prizes, to the chairman, and to all who had in any way assisted the enterprises of the club.
