THE WESTERN THEATRE.
GERMAN ATTACKS REPULSED. ALLIES PROGRESSING TRENCH BY TRENCH. (Received October 14, 9.35 a.m.) PARIS, October 13. . A communique states:— We completely repulsed infantry attacks after a heavy bombardment or our positions north-east of Souchez. There was a particularly intense artillery engagement at night between the Sommc and the Oise. We further progressed, trench by trench, east of the Trapeze. The enemy renewed their attack m the Vosges. after artillery preparation along the whole front., The assault, on the whole,' failed. The enemy at one point gained a footing m our first hne of trenches on a front ot 60 by 80 metres, ' but our counter-attacks recaptured a portion of the last ground.
