NATIONAL REGISTER.

. «. . PREPARATIONS IN HAND. WELLINGTON, October 13. The National Register, which was authorised by an Act passed during the recent session, will be compiled in the near future. Arrangements for the collection of the necessary information are now in hand, and ■within.the next two or three weeks men of military age throughout the country are likely to be called upon to fill up tho forms that will.be distributed to them. The Government has approved of a form that is- designed to make it clear to everybody concerned that the first call is to single men and men without jdependents. After supplying information regarding his age, health, employment and position in relation to do- ■ pendents, each man will be required to I answer one of the following questions: ( "If you have not already volunteered for service, are you, if a single man without dependents, willing to become a member of the Expeditionary Forces?" ''Are you, if .a single man with dependents, or a married man, or a widower with ; dependents, willing to become a member of the Expeditionary Forces if required?" Speaking in the House of Representatives the other day, the Prime Minister said that within a few weeks every woman in New Zealand would be | given an opportunity to offer her ser- J vices to the State. Mr Massey ex-! plained to-day that the organisation of women was going to bo on an entirely voluntary basis. Forms would bo available at post offices throughout the Dominion, and a woman who wanted to indicate her willingness to serve the State if her services were needed would have the right to obtain a form and [fill it in. The forms will provide/for 'the collection of information regarding the experience and qualifications of women. Knowledge of nursing or of ambulance work and experience in any clerical or industrial occupation may serve as a qualification . for service. The possible requirements of the Government in this direction are not known, much depending upon the duration of the war.
