CAPTAIN HOULKER.
NELSON, August 12. News has reached Nelson that Captain James Houlker, Officer Commanding the 13th Canterbury Regiment or the New Zealand Forces, has been killed in action. Deceased was a wellknown Nelson solicitor, of the firm of Maginnity, Son, and Houlkor. He took a prominent part in volunteering, and at one time was captain of a company at Timaru. He also maintained a keen interest in the affairs of the Nelson College, of which he was a prominent old boy.
A cable has been received, in reply to one of enquiry by the parents of Lance-Corporal H. J- Knight, of Methven, which says:—" Quite well. Progress slow." In letters received by this mail Lance-Corporal Knight states he is still in Manchester Hospital a-nd that the bullet has not yet been extracted from his light forearm, and an operation may yet be necessary tor that purpose. Ho. states: "We are made much of here and have lots of friends visiting us. who bring us all sorts of luxuries. Our only trouble is, we arc not .allowed out—otherwise we are AT. at Lloyds."
