, Tho engineer -in-chief and the >;emisi managing-director of Rolls-Royce, Ltd., the well-known British motor-jar 'Cue, have written to the London "Times ' supporting a recent letter by Mr H.-«3. Wells, the novelist, in which it was pointed out that Great Britsun should bring imaginative enterprise and the utmost; jesources of scientific knowledge tooear in winning tho war. The heads oi Holk-Royco make the following interesting suggestions in the course of their letter:—"Wo suggest that the Government should offer throe money prizes of sufficient magnitude to secure that tho best brains of tho civilised world should be ■ concentrated on tho best, solution for us of three problems, viz.:—l. How to catch, rondei ineffective, or destroy submarines. 2. How to destroy by somo new mothod or valuable improvement on older methods, German, Austrian, or Turkish combatants in tho greatest possible ■■ number in the shortest possible time. 3. How to protect ships from torpedoes. The "offer of three prizes of £100,000 each would stimulate inventors of all classes in all countries. Tho prizes should be advertised conspicuously for a considerable period in the principal . newspapers throughout the world. A committee of naval and military ex- ; parts and well-known engineers should be appointed to do nothing but exam- ' me the inventions submitted. Napo- ; leon, when Wo, by blockade, deprived him of sugar, offered a largo money jmza to inventors, with tho result that the world has beet sugar." . {«
