GAINS EXTENDED. LONDON, August 9, 5 1 Sir John 'French l rreports':':—"' Since' August 1 the artillery on both sides has been active'northward'and eastward of, [ Ypres. In these exchanges the advantage has been us. After a suci cessful "artillery bombardment this morning, in which the French on our I left co-operated effectively, we.attacked the trenches at Hooge which were 'cap- [ ttired by the enemy on July -30, and all were retaken. "We afterwards made further progress northward and westward of I Hooge, extending the front of our I captured trenches to 1200 yards. - "During the fighting we shelled a German train at Langemarck, derailing and burning five trucks. "We captured three officers and 124 unwounded men and also;two machineguns."
