the shortage of ships. resolutions by chambers of commerce: (Per Press Association-). I . WELLINGTON, August 5. ' The question of shipping facilities was treated of in proposals which were before the Chambers of Commerce Conference to-day. Mr G. W. Wilson [ moved on behalf of the Dunedin Chamber —"That, in view of the increasing shortage of tonnage and the seriousness of the general outlook as regards freight, the Government be requested ' to communicate with the Imperial Government and the Governments of other [ British Dominions with a view to I securing the services for British trade of interned enemy vessels." The remit was adopted. The conference also agreed to the following remit from Canterbury: — "That the executive thoroughly investigate the tonnage available for me carriago of next season's produce from New Zealand to the world's markets, both with regard to general and frozen' cargoes, with the view to moving in the required direction to prevent the recurrence of this season's difficulties."
The following remit from Auckland was referred to the executive with .a recommendation that. it be adopted: " That the Government be asked to introduce legislation during the present session-of Parliament amending the; law relating to the liability of carriers by sea, especially sis to the exemptions from liability which are at present claimed by. the. shipping companies.'-'
