\ AUCKLAND, August 4. The anniversary of the declaration of war was observed in Auckland .today by public meetings and special church services of intercession. Busi- | ness people had been invited by the Mayor to suspend business for this purpose from noon till 2 p.m., and there was a fairly general response. The Mayor presided at a patriotic j demonstration in the Town Hall to- ' night. I WELLINGTON, August 4. The Town Hall was packed to-night for the patriotic gathering. The Mayor of Wellington presided, and the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, Sir John Findlay, Archbishop Redwood, Bishop Sprott, the Rev. Dr Gibb and leading ci tizens . wore present. The National Reserve paraded in full : strength, maj-ching through the city to the hall. The patriotic resolution was adopted on the. Mayor's motion. A memorial service was held in St.( Paul's Pro-Cathedral this evening. The psalms and hymns and anthems were those used in St. Paul's, London, at the memorial sendee for the men of Australia and New Zealand on June. 15. The roll of honour of the church J containing about 150 names, was laid on the altar.

Services of intercession were held at St. John's Presbyterian Church, Willis Street, and at the three Wellington Congregational churches. ' TIMARU, August 4. There was beautiful weather and all shops closed froni 12 to 2 to allow a largo crowd to assemble for the patriotic demonstration. A • large proportion of the crowd wore women. The speeches were- delivered and the •Military Band assisted to make the meeting enthusiastic. The formal resolution was carried with cheers. INVERCARGILL, August 4. Declaration Day was held in very fine weather. The resolution was carried with'cheers on the part of an imImenso crowd. Part of the proceedings was a huge procession of territorials, cadets and boy scouts and National Reservists, decorated motor cars, and bands. A big demonstration was afterwards held in Rugby Park m aid of the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. >
