BANQUET TO GENERAL BOTHA.. A BRILLIANT FUNCTION. (Received August 5, 2.15 p.m.) JOHANNESBURG, August 4. A banquet tendered to General Botha was the most brilliant function ever held on the Rand. | General Botha said he didn't go to South-JYest Africa land-grabbing, but the Kaiser's guarantee of independence indicated .that the German designs on the Union .made it impossible to return the territory.. All the serious trouble in South Africa was due to German intrigue, and the German native policy was a danger to the Union.
General Smuts, recalling the removal of the Imperial troops, said the Union's promise to guard South Africa held good in the future.
