LAND VALUES LEAGUE
CONFERENCE IN WELLINGTON.
(Per: Press Association).
WELLINGTON, August' 2. - * The Dominion conference of the New Zealand Land Values League was commenced in Wellington yesterday morning. The proceedings were in committee. 'The following resolutions passed by the conference have been supplied to the Press:—- ---" That wo regret that an effort is being made to exploit the patriotic' sentiment evoked by the present world" war for the furtherance of purely} selfish interest. We condemn the suggestion that indirect taxation should be augmented by ■- the imposition of import duties and the increase of import duties, the effect of which niust necessarily be to raise still higher the cost of the common necessaries of life. We object to import duties, not merely because they hamper and restrict trade and industry, but for the reason that j they fall with undue severity .on the ] poorest of the people. Wo likewise I oppose export duties as being pre-1 judicial to the great producing indus-' trios which are vital to the pros-' perity and progress of the country." _ " That -whereas further taxation is inevitable to meet the expenses of the war, we reiterate our demand for the increased taxation of land values as being the only just and equitable method of providing' the requisite revenue." ,
