IN NEW ZEALAND.

CONDITIONS AT TRENTHAM.

LITTLE. SICKNESS NOW.

, WELLINGTON, August 2. Recent reports from the military hospitals have. appeared to indicate that Trentham camp was still providing a large proportion of the total number.of, cases of sickness, although the number of men there is now comparatively small. The Minister of Defence mentioned this matter to-day to a representative of the "New Zealand Times," and stated that ho had paid a visit to Trentham oamp on Sunday for the purpose 'of ascertaining the facts. He had found that the published lists of sick dicUrrot present the situation fairly. '' When a man leaves one of the camps on sick leave," said Mr Allen, "he is instructed to report at the Trentham Hospital on his return. It appears that in many cases men have been found on examination to be in need of further hospital treatment. They have gone into the Trentham Hospital and have appeared in the lists as Trentham sick. As a matter of fact the amount of sickness now arising in Trentham camp is very small. I examined the records for the last 10 days, and found that ho case, of measles had been reported since the beginning of that periodJ. Dr Valihtirie states' that the measles epidemic appears to have been .stopped." , . '■'■■■/' The Ministet. added that,to.'in.tehde.d; trying tj amend the system in the direction of requiring men on sick leave to secure leave bills of health from the local medical officers before they returned to the camp. It was not desirable that the convalescents should report themselves before they were fit for duty, or that they should travel while susceptible to a recurrence of their illness.
