NORTH OF ARRAS.
GERMANS. LOSE .100;000' MEN
t ■■ ' LONDON/ August-2. An American correspondent cables stating that the French hold eminences looking out upon the plain of Flanders, "on; Lille, Douai, and Cambrai. Each side., is employing formidable- artillery, both small and heavy calibre. The French girns are somewhat more numerous and are served with unlimited quantities of high explosive shells. vUp.wards of 100,000 Germans have fallen or been captured in those trenches since March.... The line was finally ;taken by tossing grenades in basfcetfuls Upon the trenches until the defenders concealed in the shelters were too weak to resist. There is extreme watchfulness against surprises on both sides. The Germans shell even one man sighted walking within four miles cf the front. It is estimated that if one man is hit for every ton of metal thrown, the average is good. Buildings are daily crumbling in Arras. Tho streets are overgrown with grass. Shops are carrying on business underground.
