Dr. Hugh Hunter has been appointed, honorary physician to the Ashburton County 'Hospital, as a mark of the Board's appreciation of his long and valued HtH-vices as medical superintendent. '

A pioneor settler, Mr R. T. Warren, died at Konini, near Pahiatua, last week, aged 74. Ho arrived in New Zealand in 1858. In the early sixties he took up the .Mangatoro Run, with tho late Mr G. G. Hamilton, and was afterwards manager of the North Island properties of the late Mr John Studholmo, of Canterbury.

A Press Association telegram from Wellington; states that on Ithe. .occasion of his retirement from the position of Chief Engineer of the maintenance branch of the New Zealand railways, Mr James Burnett was presented on Saturday-with-- several; handsome souvenirs in recognition of his; services and of the esteem in which he-is held. The ■presentation wag made by. the Hon. W. H. Hcrries, Minister of Railways, at the head office buildings, in the presence of a large assemblage of the staff.

At the „ Ashburton Hospital . and. 'Charitable Aid Board's monthly meeting to-day the following resolution was tarried :;—"That this Board places on irecord its appreciation of the valued services rendered by Miss S. E. Morley (matron) during the time she has had charge of the Ashburton County Hospital—over four years—especially as a capable manager and a strict disciplinarian; and that tho chairman be authorised to give Miss Morley a testimonial to this effect.!' It was further agreed to grant Miss Morley emolument to the extent of £10 10s (including a fortnight's salary) in virtue of extm services carried out by her, pending the arrival of the newly-ap-pointed matron.

At tho meeting of the" Asliburton Hospital. and Charitable Aid Board ■to-day, the chairman {Mr Hugo Friedlander) wrote apologising for not being able to attend. Ho said he had been ,«rged to seek the advice of a specialist regarding some internal trouble whihad made'itself felt recently, and he had decided to leave for Sydney on Wednesday. As he did not think it was right to throw any additional work upon the shoulders of the other memberSj he tendered his resignation. He wss exceedingly sorry to sever his active connection with a public institution' with which he had been connected almost since its inception. To the members of the Board he tendered his best thanks for the loyal support'they had always given him. —The actingchairnian (Mr C. J.
