DISGRACEFUL SCENES.
DISORDER AT RECRUITING MEETING.
[PREMIER HOWLED DOWN AT THE i STADIUM.
!, _ SYDNEY, August 1. Disgraceful scenes characterised the | opening. of the rocruiting campaign in | the Exhibition Building. Sections of tho audience continually interrupted the speakers. Matters reached a climax when tho crowd counted out Mr Holman, who replied:—"lf it happens that we are to be confronted by demon r strations like this there will be no alternative but to take these (young loafers and compel thorn to perform the duty they are leaving to braver and better men." The meeting resulted in only 105 recruits being obtained. I More pronounced opposition ocem'red at the Stadium, where Mr Holman and Mr Wade intended to address tho crowd of 17,000 gathered to witness the D.arcyrMcGoorty contest for the middleweight championship. Several wounded men from the Dardanelles, who accompanied the speakers, received ':\ tremendous ovation, but immediately Mr Holman attempted to speak ho was again counted out and howled down. One of tho wounded soldiers vainly appealed to the mob to be sports, but they were apparently determined not tn listen. Messrs Holman and Wade left the ring amid derisive cheers, but when the wounded soldiers vacated the ai'e.i they were greeted with genuine cheers.
