SOUTHERN CROSS FOOTBALL CLUB SOCIAL.

In the supper-room at. the back of the Theatre. Royal on Thursday evening the Southern Cross Football Club held a social evening. The attendance of, members of the club and of representatives from other clubs was large, arid Mr T. J. Turtill presided. •: The chairman proposed a motion of condolence and sympathy with the parents and friends of those members of the club who had fallen or had been wounded at the .'DardHTK'-lles. The motion was carried in the usual way.

The following toasts, were honoured: "The King"; "Kindred Clubs," proposed by the Chairman and responded to by Mr S. Gourdie (Ashburton Club); "Winning Teams"; "The Ashburton County Rugby Union,'' proposed by the Chairman. .

In the course of the evening Mr Turt/ill presented the iriedafs won by the club's players 1 at the Christchurch seven-a-side tournament, as follows:— ■J. Smith, D. Hewsori, D. Fitzgerald, E. Fitzgerald. J. McCormick, F. McKenzie, and L. Craighead. The following contributed to the programme:—Songs, Messrs T. J. Turtill, O'Connor. E. Clark, A. Moore, T. Smith, and E. Tilley; step-dances. Messrs J. Fitzgerald and O'Connor; pianoforte solo, Mr C. Ingrain. Ttie proceedings wore brought to a close by the singing of tho National Anthem.
