PERSONAL.

•Mr A. 11. Shury is an inmate of the Ash burton County Hospital on account of a. serious indisposition.

The many friends'of Mr Hugo Friedjamler will regret to learn that he is indisposed, and will b<> confined to his bod for soms days.

The Rev. W. J. Elliott returned from Auckland this morning. Mr Elliott's father died last week, and he has been attending the funeral.

Prior to his departure for Trentham on expiration of his final leave. Sergeant Sutton was presented by Messrs \V. H. Collins and Co. and the painting department employees with a case of ebony military hair brushes and Gilette razor blades.

On Thursday oven ing ]„st, between 40 and 50 people assembled ab the residence of Mrs Hume to bid farewell to her son, Trooper J. S. Hume, who Ls about to depart for the front. Trooper Hume was the recipient of numerous presents from his friends. The guests sang "For he's a jolly good fellow, )f and three cheers were given for the boys at the front. Supper was handed round and the proceedings were kept up till a,n early hour.

: The, late Mr Thomas Elliott, who passed away at Avondale on Saturday last, might almost be styled one of the old pioneers of New Zealand (says the Auckland " Star"). He was born in Kilmore, Ireland, in 1832, and came out to this country in 1864. Ho joined the Waikato Militia in the stirring times of the- M,aori War, and after his discharge followed gold-mining pursuits at the Thames. He resided over 20 years at Harrisvillo.. near Tuakau, as a farmer, and then retired to Avondale some 12 years , ago. Ho brought up a family of seven sons and two daughters two of the sons being the Rev. W j' Elliott, of Baring Square Methodist Church, Ashburton, and Mr J E Elliott, headmaster of To Kopuru Public School. Mr Elliott was a trustee of the Avondale Methodist Church, an enthusiast in politics a sterling citizen, and a loyal member of his denomination.
