MEAT FOR BRITAIN.
THE GOVERNMENT'S PURCHASES
WELLINGTON, July 29
" Our purchases of meat on behalf of the imperial" Government passed the £■3.000,000 to-day,'/ stated the Prime Minister this evening. " This enterprise, as the figures indicate, has grown to very large proportions indeed, in spite of the shortage of ships, and it has been of material advantage to the people of the country, since fanners have been assured an undisturbed market at good prices for their •stock."
Mr Massey added that the publication of the figures would show that the shortage of ships, while a serious matter, had not boon quite as grave as some people had been led to bolieve. The total amount of meat exported .since the outbreak of war was rather greater than the total for the pi;eoeding 12 months. The -Dominion had been J,000,000 carcases to the good up to the end of February. ,In other, words, the exports ha,d been 1 .OOO'.OOO carcases above the normal. The shortage of ships had occurred in the succeeding three months.
