GERMAN ATTACK IN MASS.
PARIS; July 27. A French Territorial, 'describing tho Crown Prince's failure in the Ai*gonne on the J3th. says that after a most violent bombardment, the Germans made a , massed attack, and hurled themselves on the French, shouting "The Watch on. tho Rhine. "Soventyfives" and machine-guns scattered tho
attackers, but enormous reserves soon replaced them, and swarmed up to tho trenches, outnumbering the defenders six-fold.
After two hours' of close fighting tho French ammunition was almost exhausted and the Germans gained a footing in the trenches.
The French lieutenant in command of the section resorted to a ruse. He. ordered all to Ke prono behind the trenches, and the Germans, believing the French had" retreated,, advanced shouting with joy. A sudden volley wiped out the first line. The French then charged with the bayonet through the Germans, charged back, and then went through the enemy again. The survivors became panic-stricken, many surrendered, and the remainder bolted.
