NEW YORK, July 24. The Chicago Electric Company's employees chartered the steamer Eastland tor a day's picknicking. Two thousand five hundred persons crow.ded aboard while the vessel was moored at the wharf. The weight of humanity caused a list. Many f*ll or rolled to the wrong side, and the vessel heeled over, broke her hawsers, and floated in the .middle of the river with her side subemerged. Amidst scenes of;panic, scores, were drowned in the eab^ps. Others leaped into the river. A steamer put out boats and . rescued hundreds. Policemen in launches picked up many. Scores clnmbored up the.side while the Eastland wns floating slowly down the river. All these were saved. It is believed that 700 bodies still are aboard in the flooded cabins. Lifesavers are cutting through the ship's sides hoping to reach any who. may. liave survived. ■: v. . :. ; One policeman in a boat rescued 50 wnmeu and children. ......
