COST OF LIVING.
TO THE EotTQU " GIJ All THAN."
Sir,—Anyone who has rend the late market reports/, including : that of the last Addingtori sale, must have I noticed the prices realised for fat sheep and cattle, which are now about I on a par with those ruling before the war. In Timaru the price of meat has been lowered, I understand, Id j per lb all round; but no reduction has | been made by the Ashburt'on butchers ' since prices fell, though they readily [ passed the rise on to their customers some months ago. Personally, I have had to pay top price of .late for old I ewe,' mutton. In Christehurch yoxi; ' can how; get prime chops at 5d per lb, ', and a side of first-class mutton for j 6s. Are the local butchers treating !us fairly ? i Bread is another item higher in price than it should be. The rush for wheat has ceased, and it is now emoted at about 6s 4d per bushel, and i Government-imported wheat at 5s 9d, or an average of 6s lid per bushel, i Who is getting: the benefit of the Government wheat—the millers or the consumers ? Mr TViiVbnirn's .statement that, the mibMe have been, and are bo 1'"":, exploited nil round is. in mj opinion, correct. \. SQUARE DEAL.
