WAR IN THE AIR.

A THRILLING FLICHT.

AMIDST A STORM OF SHOT AND

SHELL

! FRENCH AVIATOR'S FOOT BLOWN OFF. (Received April 23, .8.55 a.m.) PARIS, April 22. The "Petit Journal" states that a French pilot and an observer successfully bombed a corner of the "Belgian coast where there were nearly 100 anti-aircraft guns. The aviator rose 9000 feet in a storm -of shot and shell, for the return journey. A shot smashed the axle- of the front wheels and passed through the car, cutting off one of the pilot's feet. The explosion of the shell nearly capsized the machine,, and the compass dropped out. The pilot refused <.th© observer's assistance and navigated the airship for 15 miles and landed in safety in the French lines on one pair of wheels; he then crawled out through the shell hole, and later fainted. Both have been decorated.
