SWIMMING.

AN ASHBURTON SUCCESS

At the swimming 'sports at the Lyttelton Regatta yesterday, J. Harris, of the Ashburton Club, secured first place in the Ferrier Handicap, of one mile. J. E. Allen, of Ashburton, also competed. Harris had a handicap of 4min 30sec, and Allen 6min. The other competitors were C. H. Rich (30sec) and C. Atkinson (scr). The race was swum over a course of 10 laps each of 176 yards. Allen set up a good pace at the start, but soon died down, and Harris caught him and took up the lead. Harris was swimming strongly up to the sixth lap, when he slowed down considerably. Rich and Atkinson swam well. The latter caught Rich after going a lap and a half, but could not get far away from him. Just on the seventh lap Rich caught Atkinson, and by a good effort got away a few yards, and set Atkinson a hot task to get fastest time. Nearing the finish Rich was swimming better than when he started, .-and gradually closed up the gap between himself and Harris; but the latter won by over half a lap from Rich, who beat Atkinson by about 12 yards. The following are the times: — Harris, 32min 45sec; Rich. 29min 2 l-ssec; Atkinson, 28min 43 l-ssec. Atkinson gained the fastest time prize.
