HAMPSTEAD.

The Hampstead School held its annual " breaking-up" ceremony and distribution of prizes and certificates Jin. the school last evening. In the absence of tlie chairman, owing to indisposition, the Rev. J. D. McArthur occupied tlie chair. The attendance of parents was large. An apology for unavoidable absence was received from Mr W. Nosworthy. M.P. The Headmaster's annual report stated that the school year had been a. most successful one in every., way. Both the numbers on the roll and tlie average attendance had considerably increased. There were now 364 on the ■roll, with an average of 328. The school would bo entitled to another assistant-mistress should the number keep up. Parents and guardians were urged to do their best to keep their children regularly at school, in the interests of the children as well as in the interests of the school. The results of the examinations had been most encouraging, though some parents still foiled to recognise the importance of the quarterly examinations, which, in conjunction with the annual examination by the headmaster, determined the positions of all children up to tlie Sixth Standard. The Inspector's examination of the Sixth Standard had resulted in all 23

candidates passing, 19 obtaining proficiency and four competency certifi cates. An excellent report on the work of the Fifth and Sixth Standarc children had been received from the Director of. the Ashburton Teehnica School. The staff had worked assiduously, and its work had v been favourably reported upon by the Inspector. The year, however, had been a mosi trying one for the staff, owing to the overcrowded state of tlie school during the first half of the year, and later to the inconveniences which had arisen owing to additions being made to the building. The new infant room (the most modern one of the kind in the County) would be ready for occupation after the holidays. The school would still need the ever-watchful care of the committee and- parents,

for the room used by the senior classes I was much too small. Thanks was extended to donors of prizes. . The reading of the report was re;coived with applause. > A short address was given by the ißev. J. R. Burgin (chairman of the .Borough School Committee). He referred to the friendly rivalry between tli© Hampstead and Borough schools, and said .that the' two institutions ap- ' pea-red to him to.be running level. It was a source of gratification to him itha-t the attendance at the Bible class had this year been better than, in the previous.'; year. He gave the scholars a few words of advice, and said that they should not be content until they had reached the highest pinnacle of all. They might reach certain heights, but there were higher heights 'yet to bo reached by the ambitious boy ; or girl. He concluded by wishing the scholars a happy holiday, and said he 'trusted that they would come back refreshed and ready for the work in the next year. (Applause.) The chairman also addressed a. few remarks to the children. He said that probably those scholars who were now leaving the school might think their, education was finished. That they would soon find out wa.s-not the case. They would be learning new things every day. They .were the men and women of the future.—schoolmasters, doctors, engineers, ministers in the making, as it were, and they should see to it that they learnt some new thing every day. When they I reached mature manhood and womanhood they woatld probably remember bis words, and would know then that' they were true. (Applause.) The Rev. J. R.
