CALEDONIAN SPORTS.

METHVEN'S THIRD ANNUAL GATHER SNG. The Methven Caledonian Society, after having been most unfortunate as regards climatic conditions for its first two gatherings, had ideal weather for its third annual meeting yesterday (Anniversary Day). There was an attractive programme of 55 events, for most of which the'entries were good. Among the contestants were several well-known Canterbury and Ashburton Gounty athletes. There were also two or three of the btfct of the South Island pipe.- players and exponents of Highland dancing. The athletic events wore closely contested, and there were many close finishes. The cycling track (clay) was in good order,, and the cycling races were of a very interestingl nature 1. The Ashburton County Pipe Band was present and played a good programme of music throughout the day. Generally speaking, the general arrangements were good, but thel officials could do more in the direction of see-

ing that the events are got off with greater promptness. Too much time was spent on children's races at the ex-j .pens© of the chief programme events.! The. secretary (Mr J. H. Stone, junr.) discharged his duties in it satisfactory manner, as also did Mr H. Green (the treasurer). The other officials did useful detail work.
