The Japanese have occupied Tsinanfu. It is persistently stated in Tientsin tliat the Germans .propose to demolish Tsingtao in. preference' to allowing it to fall into the hands of the Allies. Lord Kitchener has accepted a contingent of 100 from Shanghai for service at the front, the British community paying their passage. A Melbourne message states that in the Federal House Mr Fisher stated that already £1,169,000 had been spent on tho Expeditionary Force. The war would necessitate further large increase in expenditure. Both Houses pas?ed a! rote of £100,000 as a gift to Belgium. With reference to Mr Lloyd George's I statement that the cotton trade has j broken down, inquiries at Manchester show that although the trade has bee" badly hit, about half the workers still are in employment. The Germans retreating before the j Russian armies are losing a tremendous number' of horses in the marshes.! Heavy artillery ;eonsequently is abandoned. *, Eight German ctnerehants at Ca.sa-bla-nra were arrested for espionage arc! inciting the Moroccans to rebellion. !i is alleged that they planned to mn<=sacre the French and seize Morocco for Germany. - i
