IRELAND'S POSITION.
MORTGAGE INDEBTEDNESS INCREASING. SAVINGS WITHDRAWN FIIOM , PRODUCTIVE USE. (Per Press Association—Copyright). LONDON, May 31. The report of 'the committee of the Department of Agriculture on Technical Education in Ireland states that the mortgage indebtedness of Irish land is probably increasing £2,000,000 annually. Money-lendere have greatly increased, whilst the ' "gobeen" man has almost disappeared, but injurious 1 amounts of long credit with shops have been found in ■ the ' various districts, much of which is 'for feeding stuffs which the farmer could himself grow. The savings of the' rural classes, amounting to many millions, have been withdrawn from productive use locally, and have been transferred for invest- ' ment in London.
The report adds that QsSsistance to the economic progress of rural Ireland is possible if only part of this money is available for lending to small farmers. '-, i i
