ESTATES PURCHASED
LAST YEAR'S EXPENDITURE. . (Per Press. Association.) • ■ WELLINGTON, May 29. The Government spent £581,828 last financial year in acquiring and subdividing estates under the Land for Settlements Act. To meet this expenditure debentures were issued to the amount of £306,000, £340,183 was derived in rents from, estates, £135,664 from the- sale of Crown lands, besides other sums, making a total of £1,052,981. This enabled the estates to be purchased. Fifty thousand pounds' worth of debentures was redeemed, £247 ',689 was paid in interest, £67,410 was applied to sinking funds,' and a cash balance of £64,297 remained at the end of'the year.
