A message to the ;., Government says that there is no sign of either ; steamer. Lifeboats are visible in the distance round the steamer Eureka, which responded to the S.O.S. calls of the Empress of Ireland. The Government steamer Lady Evelyn fs standing by. The Empress of Ireland cleared the Customs yesterday for Liverpool. She had 1287 souls on board, made up as under :— First saloon 77 Second saloon 206 -. Steerage ... .'..-. ... 504 crewf ... *mn The passengers included a large party of Salvation Army officers, who were going to London to attend the International Congress of the Army. Both vessels are believed to have sunk.
