ROWING.
CHKISTG'HURCH, December 17. An event in the history of rowing in New Zealand took place this afternoon on the Avon, when the preliminary heats in the rowing contest between Christ's . College, Boys' High School, Wanganui College and Waitaki High School took place. .Tlie weather could hardly have been more favourable, bright sunshine and little wind providing ideal conditions for racing. There was a big attendance of the public, a large number of whom followed the race on bicycles or in motor-cars. The first race between the Wanganui College and the Christchurch Jioys' High School produced a great finish. It was an even one all the way. and the School gained the verdict by only a few feet. The results are as follows:—First heat: Boys' High School, R. D. Fitch (stroke), T. G. B. Candy (3), W. Stanbury (2) and .C. Miln (bow), beat Wanganui College, W. G. Haybittle (stroke), W. M. Cowper (3), R. H. Espiner (2), , and C. C. Miles (bow). Won by two and a-half feet. The School led under the new bridge, but at Cowlishaw's Corner College led by a length. From this on to the finishing post the lighter School crew fought magnificently against their heavier opponents and pulled off a great race amidst tremendi ous excitement.. Second "heat: Waitaki High School,. W. F. Warner (stroke), W. S. Anderson (3), R. A. Church (2) and A. G. Jamieson (bow), beat Christ's College, W. Free (stroke), J. L. Richards, (3), W. E.
