THE CTY

CHRISTCHURCH DAY BY DAY.

The Cliristchurch brickmakers and their employees have come to an agreement in.regard to the dispute between them., v . Inquiries, for work have not veen very frequent at the Labour Department of late. Some time this week the officer in "charge of the Bureau will send aj body of men to Parnassus to undertake road making work- at Conway Gorge and along the banks of ■ the. river. The new road will run along the southern side of the river and obviate the necessity for traffic negotiating two fords of the Conway. The combination of a wet day, a public holiday and an election ' proved too much for several citizens of Christchurch, and the police made a goodly haul of inebriates, etc., on Tuesday (says the "Press"). There were nine or 10 in the cells yesterday morning, but this number, although not very large, is rather a big one for Christchurch, which,, on the whole, is an orderly city. ■, A general labourer, speaking to a. reporter yesterday'morning, said that if tne workers broke agreements the employers did so also, and did so very readily. The new award of the Union, he said, had only been in force a week or two, and, like the old award, it gave preference to unionists. In spite of that fact the employers at the big grain and wool sheds had taken on nonunionists while unionists' names were on vie boobs awaiting employment. For many months past there, have been complaints of numerous ■■■'■thefts. I from the Opera House. The. refreshment room, upstairs was broken into on j several occasions, and large quantities lof chocolates and other sweets stolen. [Various sum^s of money were also taken :■; [ The; dressing-rooms at the back, of the ! stage were also>,entered by the mysterious thief,.: and 'numerous articles of clothing, jewellery, and other effects stolen. A number of the artists appearing at the Opera Hoiise during the past few months complained of losses of their property. Yesterday after- , noon Detective-Sergeant Cox and Detective Eade arrested a young man, who will appear before the Court to-day on 14 charges of theft at the Opera' House.—" Press." " : '-
